Gaia

The term ‘Gaia’ is commonly used to describe the interconnected, living organism that is planet Earth. This principle of Earth as a single, superorganism can also be used to view human society, and our intrinsic interconnectedness. In this regard, ‘Gaia’ expresses herself as a state of human consciousness. Within this paradigm, human society recognizes itself as a living organism… interwoven with the greater, living organism of the planet; human interaction is based on principles of mutual support and synergistic interconnectivity.

Although the term comes from Greek mythology, where it is used to refer to the goddess of planet Earth, it was popularised by James Lovelock who used it in his Gaia hypothesis – a theory that portays the Earth’s ecosystem as a superorganism. With the Gaia Project, we are stretching Lovelock’s concept of singularity beyond its ecological focus, expanding it to encompass the sphere of human interaction – describing a new paradigm of human consciousness.
